About Nick Weare

I’ve been around Tasmanian music and recorded sound for more than sixty years — and I’m still finding new stories.

I started in radio at Hobart’s 7HO back in 1965, aged just fourteen, then joined the ABC in Hobart in 1969, where I spent years working across radio, television and concert presentation — everything from technical operations and production to announcing, publicity and running the record library.

Along the way I got hands-on with Tasmania’s independent recording scene too, working with Spectangle Studios and Candle Records to help local musicians, choirs, schools and community groups get their music onto record. It gave me a front-row seat to the studios, labels and people who quietly shaped so much of Tasmania’s musical life.

From 2000 to 2010 I worked at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia, first as Manager of Digital Restoration and later as a Radio and Recorded Sound Specialist — preserving and restoring old recordings, building the national collection, and recording oral histories along the way.

But really, this all started long before any of that. I grew up in a musical household in Hobart, surrounded by records, live music, radio and stories about Tasmania’s musical life. Over the years I’ve kept collecting — records, photos, documents, catalogues, interviews, memories — and I’ve known and worked with many of the people whose stories you’ll find on this site.

Tasmania on Record grew out of a simple realisation: this history had never been pulled together in one place, and it was at real risk of being lost. This project is my attempt to preserve it — the records, and the stories behind them.
